It’s hard to believe it’s been 5 years since we established The Dirt Off Road Campers back in 2014. Rolling off the back of a thirteen month big lap of Australia in a four wheel drive and off road camper, while working as travel writers for the Bauer Media Group, we were up for a new challenge and keen to leverage our travelling experience to help others do the same.
We initially started selling campers from our back yard in Littlehampton. We cleared out the garage and before long we were selling the dream. We started with Patriot Campers as the first nationally appointed dealer. Stockman Products (Pod Trailer) followed 8 months later, as well as Track Trailer, selling their soft floor camper the ‘Mate’.
By the end of year 1 we were yearning for a commercial premises and found a large warehouse in Oborn Road Mount Barker. While it was large, it was an older building and shared with another tenant, so wasn’t ideal. In 2016 we added the Rhinomax hybrids, again as the first nationally appointed dealer. While they sold well in the first year, sales receded in 2017, so by early 2018 we had to let them go.
Pioneer Campers came on board in 2017, with the Pioneer Mitchell quickly claiming the crown as our top selling camper. After owning a Track Tvan for four years, the improvements were immediately evident. The Mitchell was not only easier to setup, it had more room inside and loads more storage.
We also added Travelander in that year with both the tray back and GEO campers.
With our expanding range, we upgraded our premises, moving into our current digs at 26 Light Cres Mount Barker. It’s a beautiful site, around 2000m2, fenced, and with plenty of off street parking and two showrooms. The front of house caters for camping accessories, leaving a large undercover showroom to the rear plus a separate workshop for camper servicing.
During 2018 we added three new hybrids, including the 10ft compact Bushranger Joey and the BRS Offroad Sherpa and Pursuit Platinum.
Topping off a great year, we picked up the 2018 Dealer/Retailer of the Year – Silver Billy award from the Caravan and Camping Industry of South Australia (CCIASA), recognising exceptional performance, and in particular, outstanding customer service and business practices.
